Dell Inspiron 15z - Thin and Light 15.6" Laptop

Dell's list of laptop models continues to grow. The new Dell Inspiron 15z is a thin-and-light version of the regular Inspiron 15. The 15z earns its 'z' badge by incorporating a much thinner design and using Intel ultra low voltage CPUs.

The Cherry Red lid of this particular unit made it very handsome. The standard version is shiny black, termed 'Obsidian Black', while color options cost about $40 extra.

This view of the keyboard shows it to fairly average and lacking of a dedicated numerical keypad, which some 15.6" screen laptops are including now.

Lenovo IdeaPad S12 with Via Nano Processor

The Lenovo IdeaPad S12 is one of the largest 'netbooks' available, because it comes with a 12.1-inch 1200x800 wxga screen. It also weighs about 3 and half pounds, making it heavier than most netbooks as well. Even so, the S12 is a unique offering that may be exactly what some users are looking for.

The most outstanding feature of the S12 as a netbook, besides it's larger screen, is it's superb keyboard.

The keyboard is full-size, and the designers have taken full advantage of any available space in maximizing the size of the keys. The keyboard resembles that of the G-series Lenovos, which are also very good.

The keyboard feels excellent with great feedback and an adequate amount of key travel and separation.

The keyboard is so good that you might be reminded of the famous 'thinkpad' keyboards. The touchpad unfortunately is a bit on the small side, but given what a great job Lenovo has done with the keyboard, this should not  be a major issue.

The design of the exterior is understated but not boring. The glossy black lid will likely attract fingerprints, but its subtle pattern adds a touch of design.

The port selection on the S12 is fairly typical, with 3 USB ports and a VGA port. What is unusual is the presence of an ExpressCard slot, which provides for some welcomed additional versatility. One can easily add a variety of devices or cellular modems thanks to the presence of this handy port.
